OPP Disowns Peter Mayen’s Statements, Reaffirms Commitment to Peace Process

Juba, South Sudan – June 17, 2025

The leadership of the Other Political Parties (OPP) has officially distanced itself from recent public statements made by Hon. Peter Mayen Majongdit regarding the peace process in South Sudan. In a strongly worded press release dated June 17, 2025, the OPP categorically rejected Mayen’s so-called “Urgent Call for Dialogue to Salvage South Sudan’s Peace Process,” clarifying that he no longer represents the OPP and has no authority to speak on its behalf.

According to the press release, Hon. Peter Mayen, the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, made statements beginning June 13, 2025, which were widely circulated in media outlets. The OPP stressed that these statements do not reflect its position and urged all parties involved in the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) to take note of this clarification.

Clear Stance on Nasir Incident

The OPP reiterated its position on the Nasir incident, emphasizing the following:

  1. It unequivocally condemned the violence and the incident in Nasir.
  2. It called for immediate accountability and demanded government action to restore law and order in the affected regions.
  3. The OPP reaffirmed its full commitment to the implementation of the R-ARCSS, maintaining that it is the only viable path to South Sudan’s first general elections.
  4. The OPP urged for the urgent review of Chapter Two of the peace agreement to accelerate the unification of command structures under one Commander-in-Chief.
  5. The public was urged to remain calm and focused on the implementation of the peace process.
Disavowal of Leadership Claims

The statement also addressed confusion surrounding leadership, stating categorically that the OPP has never had Peter Mayen as a leader. His claims to leadership or representation were described as "false and misleading."

Furthermore, it was revealed that Peter Mayen’s own political party, the People’s Liberal Party (PLP) a member of the OPP dismissed and disowned him, stripping him of all representation rights under the OPP. Consequently, he no longer holds any standing or legitimacy to speak or act on the group’s behalf.

Call for Unity and Peace

Hon. Mayen Jeremiah Turic, the OPP Spokesperson, signed the release, reaffirming the group’s commitment to peace, stability, and full implementation of the R-ARCSS. He urged all stakeholders to unite against disinformation and unauthorized actions that could derail the hard-earned progress toward lasting peace in South Sudan.
